Botanical Traceability and Adulteration: A Buyer’s Guide
Botanical adulteration is not limited to obvious contamination. It can include substitution with another species, use of the wrong plant part, dilution with low-cost material, undeclared carriers, synthetic marker addition or a genuine herb processed in a way that no longer matches the agreed specification.
For buyers, the most effective defence is a connected control system. Documentation, supplier qualification, botanical identity and chemistry should support one another from the source material to the released extract batch.

Traceability connects the claimed botanical to the commercial batch and its test evidence.
1. Know the main failure modes

2. Traceability starts before extraction
The chain should record botanical name, plant part, cultivation or collection area, harvest period, drying method, lot number and initial supplier. For high-risk plants, an authenticated voucher or reference sample can strengthen future investigations.
3. One marker is rarely enough
A single assay may confirm that a compound is present, but not that the claimed botanical created it. Related species can share markers, and isolated compounds can be added. Stronger programs combine identity techniques such as macro- or microscopy, TLC or HPTLC, chromatographic fingerprints, targeted assays and other methods selected for the processed form.
4. DNA has strengths and limitations
DNA methods can be valuable for raw or lightly processed material, but extraction, heat and purification may degrade or remove DNA. A negative or inconclusive result in a concentrated extract does not automatically prove substitution. Method selection must match the material.
5. Reconcile the commercial documents
The purchase order, specification, COA, manufacturing record, invoice and shipping documents should agree on species, plant part, extract ratio, marker, carrier, origin and batch number. Inconsistencies can reveal that the quoted grade and shipped grade are not the same.
6. Use a risk-based testing plan
Testing intensity should reflect ingredient value, known adulteration history, supply-chain length, geographic risk, process complexity and intended dose. New suppliers and unusual price movements justify additional scrutiny. Established suppliers still require periodic verification and change notification.
7. Retain samples and investigate deviations
Keep representative pre-shipment, received and released samples where practical. If colour, odour, density, solubility or fingerprint changes unexpectedly, place the lot on hold and compare it with approved reference batches before relying on a repeat assay alone.

Identify likely adulterants and failure modes.
Select methods that can discriminate them.
Reconcile documents and composition.
Verify new suppliers and periodically retest established supply.
Record deviations, investigations and corrective action.
