
Flaxseed Extract Specifications: How to Compare SDG 20% vs 40%
Flaxseed extract is often presented as a simple choice between “20%” and “40%” lignans. For an Australian manufacturer or purchasing team, that percentage is only the starting point. Two materials carrying the same headline assay can perform differently because of the analytical method, plant part, carrier, particle size, extraction process and behaviour in the finished formulation.

What does SDG mean on a flaxseed extract specification?
SDG is secoisolariciresinol diglucoside, a lignan marker associated with flaxseed. Commercial flaxseed extracts are commonly compared by their stated SDG percentage. The specification should identify the botanical as Linum usitatissimum L., state the plant part, define the assay method and distinguish the extract from ordinary milled flaxseed powder or flaxseed oil.
A 20% SDG extract is not simply a weaker version of every 40% product. The carrier system and extraction profile may differ. Buyers should therefore compare complete specifications rather than calculate value from assay percentage alone.
When can a 20% SDG grade be the better choice?
A 20% grade can suit projects where the target serving permits more ingredient mass, where the formulation benefits from easier powder handling, or where cost per finished unit matters more than maximum concentration. It may also provide more flexibility in dry blends if the selected grade has acceptable flow and dispersibility. These advantages are grade specific and should be confirmed through samples and trial batches.
When does a 40% SDG grade make more sense?
A 40% grade may be useful when tablet or capsule space is limited, when a formulation requires a more concentrated marker input, or when freight and storage efficiency are important. Higher assay does not automatically mean better beverage performance. A concentrated grade can still create sediment, flavour, colour or processing challenges depending on its carrier and physical properties.
Five documents and data points to compare
1. Botanical identity and plant part — confirm Linum usitatissimum L. and whether the commercial extract is produced from seed hull or another defined seed fraction.
2. Assay and analytical method — the COA should identify SDG and state the agreed method, commonly HPLC or another specification-defined method. Results from different methods should not be treated as automatically interchangeable.
3. Carrier and extraction information — request the carrier declaration, extraction solvent information and any relevant residual-solvent limits. “Water soluble” should not be accepted without a clear grade-specific definition.
4. Physical and contaminant specifications — review appearance, particle size, bulk density, microbiological limits, heavy metals, pesticides and other project-relevant contaminants.
5. Batch and supply documentation — ask for the current specification, representative COA, SDS, allergen and GMO statements, country-of-origin information and available stability or storage guidance.
Solubility: ask a formulation question, not a yes-or-no question
Flaxseed extract powders may be described as soluble, dispersible or suitable for beverage use, but these terms do not guarantee a clear and stable drink. For a liquid application, define the target concentration, pH, heat treatment, order of addition, mixing equipment, holding time and acceptable sediment. A bench trial should check immediate dispersion as well as the product after storage.
For capsules, tablets and dry powder blends, the practical questions shift toward flow, compression behaviour, hygroscopicity, colour uniformity and compatibility with other ingredients. The same grade should not be assumed to work equally well in every dosage form.
How Australian regulatory positioning affects the brief
The ingredient specification does not by itself authorise a finished-product health claim. Food, complementary medicine and cosmetic projects follow different regulatory pathways, and the intended claims can affect the evidence and documentation required. FSANZ Standard 1.2.7 governs nutrition, health and related claims for foods; general-level and high-level health claims have specific substantiation and eligibility requirements.

A useful enquiry states: required SDG percentage; intended application; target serving or inclusion range; preferred carrier; need for water dispersion or clear solubility; expected annual volume; destination market; launch timing; and mandatory documents. This produces more comparable quotations than asking only for “flaxseed extract price”.
