Hawthorn Extract: Crataegus Species and Quality Control
Hawthorn is a good example of why common names are not sufficient for botanical procurement. “Hawthorn extract” may refer to different Crataegus species, different plant parts and different analytical specifications. A European leaf-and-flower extract is not automatically equivalent to a Chinese hawthorn fruit extract.
The purchasing decision should start with the intended botanical source and product pathway, then define the plant part, extraction process, marker system and identity controls.

Species and plant part must be fixed before ratio or assay is compared.
1. Species are not interchangeable by name
European monographs commonly reference Crataegus monogyna, C. laevigata and certain related taxa for leaf-and-flower preparations. Asian commercial supply frequently includes Crataegus pinnatifida, often using fruit. Both are hawthorns, but they are not the same raw material.
2. Plant part changes the chemistry

3. Ratios and markers answer different questions
A 10:1 ratio describes a nominal input-to-extract relationship, subject to how the manufacturer calculates native extract and carrier. Marker specifications may include flavonoids, oligomeric procyanidins or other profile criteria. The ratio does not prove marker level, and a single marker does not prove the correct species or plant part.
4. Use identity methods that discriminate
Microscopy can support raw-material control. TLC or HPTLC and chromatographic fingerprints can help distinguish plant parts and species when suitable references are available. HPLC results should be interpreted as a profile, not merely adjusted to make one peak pass.
5. Do not solve identity problems by fortification
Adding flavonoids or other compounds to make the assay resemble another hawthorn material does not convert one species into another. It can create a misleading specification and may conceal substitution. Identity, composition and assay should be controlled separately.
6. Extraction process matters
Water, hydroalcoholic and other extraction systems can produce different profiles. Ask for the solvent range, native extract ratio, carrier percentage, yield and residual-solvent limits. Two products labelled 10:1 can still be materially different.
7. Build the dossier around the intended market
Request botanical identity, plant part, origin, manufacturing flow, composition, specification, COA, fingerprint, contaminant controls and stability. For therapeutic presentations, the applicable monograph and regulatory pathway may impose additional requirements.
Buyer checklist
Write the full Latin name and plant part.
State whether fruit or leaf-and-flower material is required.
Define ratio, native extract and carrier.
Select marker and fingerprint methods.
Reject species substitution or assay fortification.
Test the actual commercial batch against an approved reference.
