However, successful botanical products require more than adding a fashionable herb to a formula. The species, plant part, extraction method, active markers, taste, solubility, dose and regulatory pathway all need to work together.

2. Botanical ingredients create stronger differentiation

For example, a generic energy powder may compete mainly on caffeine dose and flavour. A more differentiated concept might combine tea-derived caffeine with Rhodiola and a botanical flavour system. The brand then has a clearer story, but it must still manage bitterness, stability and evidence.
3. Modern formats are expanding botanical use
Botanical extracts are no longer limited to tablets and capsules. Better extraction, drying, granulation and dispersibility options allow them to appear in gummies, ready-to-drink beverages, shots, stick packs, instant powders, concentrates and alcohol-free glycerites.

4. Standardisation is replacing vague herb claims

Green tea may be specified by polyphenols, catechins, EGCG and caffeine.

Mushroom extracts may be compared using beta-glucans rather than total polysaccharides alone.

5. Clean-label expectations are changing specifications
“Natural” is no longer enough. Brands increasingly ask about extraction solvents, carriers, processing aids, preservatives, residual solvents, allergens, GMO status, pesticide controls and country of origin.
This means procurement and R&D teams need to define what clean label actually means for their product. A spray-dried extract may require a carrier for stability. An alcohol-free liquid may still require glycerine and a preservation strategy. Transparent composition is more useful than vague marketing language.

The finished format determines the correct botanical specification.
6. Compliance must be designed early
The same botanical may be treated differently depending on whether the final product is a food, beverage, complementary medicine, cosmetic or animal-nutrition product. Intended use, dose, claims, presentation and market all affect suitability.
